This was big when I was a young person going out to shows, but it recently experienced a second life through becoming a meme. To me, this slippery synth lead is one of the most classic lead sounds out there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Bag Raiders - Shooting Stars (Official Video)\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/feA64wXhbjo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fun fact: <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"according to Wikipedia (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shooting_Stars_(Bag_Raiders_song)\" target=\"_blank\">according to Wikipedia,<\/a> this sound was originally created on a pocket synth called a Stylophone (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"a Bag Raiders interview, (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=xnVYAWnZAl0\" target=\"_blank\">the Bag Raiders later described the lead in an interview<\/a> as \u201cthe most annoying sound we could possibly make\u201d). As it turns out, it\u2019s actually an incredibly fun instrument, so I used it as the base sound source for our synth patch recreation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Selecting a sound source for our synth lead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s begin by finding the best possible sound source to use in our sound design process. Since we already know that we want to use the Stylophone for this specific lead, I recorded a long held note on it to import into <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/plugins\/39137242-serum-2-au-by-xfer-records\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Serum<\/a> as a wavetable (if you&#8217;re crafting your own sound from scratch, you can import any sample of your choice, or explore the built-in options that come with your synth).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio alignwide\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/01-Orig-Stylophone-recording.wav\" preload=\"auto\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Our Stylophone sample<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lead sound we&#8217;re going for is kind of thin and &#8216;nasal&#8217;\u2014in order to achieve this effect, let\u2019s narrow the <strong>pulse width<\/strong>. You may have noticed the acronym <strong>PWM<\/strong> on certain hardware synths or synth plugins; this acronym stands for \u201cpulse width modulation.\u201d Without going too deep into the math behind it, PWM basically allows you to adjust the amount of time that a wave spends in the top of its cycle. In other words, adjusting the width of the pulse squashes up the wave and results in a &#8216;narrower&#8217; sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Serum, we can narrow the pulse width by adjusting the <strong>PWM Warp<\/strong> parameter in our oscillator engine. We can also play around with transposing the oscillators by +\/- 8 va and adding a sub oscillator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The terms <strong>monophonic<\/strong> (hereafter referred to as <strong>mono<\/strong>) and <strong>polyphonic<\/strong> (<strong>poly<\/strong>) refer to the number of different voices a synth can play simultaneously. In mono, only one note can be played at a time, whereas poly means that multiple notes can be played. For this sound (and most lead sounds) we\u2019ll use mono, so that we can take advantage of the <strong>Glide<\/strong> parameter to nail the grace note in the song\u2019s melodic motif. For pads, chords, or anything that uses harmony, you\u2019ll need to use poly to employ more than one voice.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"493\" height=\"567\" data-src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-02.png\" alt=\"synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-02\" class=\"wp-image-18349 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-02.png 493w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-02-348x400.png 348w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-02-222x255.png 222w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 493px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 493\/567;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now, let&#8217;s dive deeper into the Glide parameter, since it&#8217;s very important to this particular sound. In this context, &#8220;glide&#8221; means to slide from one note into another, and we can adjust how fast this happens by changing the <strong>Glide Time<\/strong>. A small amount of this parameter combined with the grace note in the melodic motif really hooks the ear; in general, adding a grace note is a great compositional technique that you can use in a wide range of situations to make your synth lead sound more interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s add some <strong>Unison<\/strong> and <strong>Detune<\/strong> as well. Unison will stack another voice on top of the existing sound to act as a layer, while detuning will slightly adjust the pitch of each layered voice. This helps our sound feel &#8216;wider&#8217; because it&#8217;s covering a larger range of frequencies. Just a tiny bit of this effect is appropriate for this sound\u2014if we make the patch sound too wide, it&#8217;ll begin to lose focus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modulation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Modulation is the process by which synthesized sounds are manipulated and shaped. <strong>Envelopes<\/strong> and <strong>LFOs<\/strong> acting on parameters over time give a sound interest, intrigue, and signature sonic characteristics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New sound designers may wonder when to use an envelope for modulation and when to use an LFO. Both tools accomplish essentially the same thing: changing a parameter over time. The difference is that an LFO repeats for as long as the note is held, while an envelope is triggered only once. In other words, an envelope changes the destination parameter according to the attack, decay, sustain, and release times specified by the user, while an LFO changes the destination parameter according to a looping wave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This particular sound we&#8217;re designing has some vibrato. We\u2019ll use the LFO to accomplish this effect, because we don\u2019t want it to happen just once; rather, we want vibrato throughout the entire sound. We\u2019ll apply the LFO to the <strong>Fine<\/strong> parameter (which refers to fine tuning) so that the pitch wobbles, but only slightly. For a quick vibrato, I find that a <strong>Rate<\/strong> of ~7 Hz works well. Adding a <strong>Delay<\/strong> of ~200 ms will make our vibrato weave into the sound a bit more gradually as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For amplitude, we\u2019ll use an envelope, because we don\u2019t want the changes to repeat throughout the course of the held note. By default, Serum uses EG 1 for amplitude, so we\u2019ll stick with that. That said, in your patches, try adding more and more modulation on different parameters; this is the key to making complex presets!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#62daff\"><a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/features\/sounds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Explore royalty-free one-shots, loops, FX, MIDI, and presets from leading artists, producers, and sound designers.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Effects<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, we\u2019ll use effects to put the finishing touches on the sound. I like to do this step at the end, because while effects can significantly influence the sound of the patch, they\u2019re not often <em>the<\/em> defining quality. I find it\u2019s best to look at effects like the cherry on top of our patch sundae. Also keeping in mind that they may be applied in the mixing process, and not necessarily just within the patch, we\u2019ll try to use the effects available to us to get the sound dialed in as close as possible to the original. This might include chorus, EQ, compression, reverb, distortion, bitcrush, or more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our goal with this patch\u2019s effects chain is to make our sound cut through the mix. It should be bright and attention-grabbing to hook the ear. We\u2019ll make this happen by using <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/what-is-compression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"compression (opens in a new tab)\">compression<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"distortion (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/effects-101-distortion\/\" target=\"_blank\">distortion<\/a> to saturate our patch with more high-frequency content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Distortion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA little distortion, a lot of the time\u201d is a good rule of thumb to begin with. We don\u2019t need that much here\u2014just enough to give our patch a little more bite. When adding distortion to your patches, try out different distortion algorithms to see what sounds best. In this patch, I think Serum\u2019s downsample algorithm gives a nice effect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Downsampling is a <strong>bitcrush<\/strong> effect, which is another form of distortion. Bitcrushers typically feature two main methods for introducing distortion: <strong>sample rate reduction<\/strong> and <strong>bit depth reduction<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"128\" data-src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-05-1024x128.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18352 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-05-1024x128.png 1024w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-05-400x50.png 400w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-05-355x44.png 355w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-05-768x96.png 768w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-05.png 1287w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/128;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>As the sample rate parameter is lowered to extreme values, we introduce an effect known as <strong>aliasing<\/strong> to the signal. Without getting <em>too<\/em> deep into DSP theory, we usually work at sample rates of at least twice the upper limit of human hearing in order to accurately reproduce the signal and avoid aliasing. When we reduce the sample rate with a bitcrusher, we intentionally introduce aliasing so we can use it as a creative effect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Digital audio is also sampled using numbers of a certain precision: the higher the bit depth, the higher the precision. More bit depth means more resolution, so most modern DAWs work at a 64-bit resolution. This is great for making music at the highest quality possible\u2014but again, by intentionally reducing the resolution using a bitcrusher, we can introduce noise into our signal for aesthetic purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although intentionally reducing our patch\u2019s sample rate and bit depth may sound counter-intuitive, here this will give our patch bite and intensity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Compression<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our last bit of effects will be dynamics processing, using Serum\u2019s <strong>Compressor<\/strong> module. Compression is useful in many situations because it tames renegade peaks, thereby reducing dynamic range. This, in turn, means the body of the signal will be louder, so the entire signal will sound more full. This can be excellent on synth leads, especially for helping cut through the mix!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"127\" data-src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-06-1024x127.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18353 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-06-1024x127.png 1024w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-06-400x50.png 400w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-06-355x44.png 355w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-06-768x95.png 768w, https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/synth-lead-stand-out-serum-in-post-06.png 1316w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/127;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Much like distortion, when applying compression, think \u201ca little compression, a lot of the time.\u201d Our settings don\u2019t need to be too aggressive here since the compressor is the last processor in our chain. Attack and release can be relatively short, and our threshold setting can vary according to the sound\u2019s amplitude peaks. A ratio setting of around 3 &#8211; 4 will give us a lot of gain reduction for this particular lead, without squashing the sound too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once we add make-up gain as necessary, we have a completed synth lead patch that stands out in the mix and catches the listener\u2019s attention:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio alignwide\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/shooting-star-recreation-audio.wav\" preload=\"auto\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Our final patch playing the iconic melody of &#8220;Shooting Stars&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Go forth and create your own synth lead sounds<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The old parable says: \u201cIf you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day.
