By breaking speech down into a minimal number of bands that prioritized intelligibility, <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/what-is-a-vocoder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the vocoder<\/a> allowed for low-bandwidth communication that could occur even across seas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dudley&#8217;s revolutionary invention went on to be used in a wide array of applications, from digital voice encryption systems to cochlear implants. That said, today we&#8217;ll be focusing on the specific use case that&#8217;s probably most familiar to us\u2014music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-blog-splice wp-block-embed-blog-splice\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"vxXHUR7FtR\"><a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/what-is-a-vocoder\/\">What is a vocoder? Siemens Studio for Electronic Music developed one of the earliest attempts at a vocoding synthesizer in the 1950s, but what really made the sound as we know it take off was Robert Moog and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Wendy Carlos' (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/who-is-wendy-carlos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wendy Carlos&#8217;<\/a> iterations on hardware musical vocoders in the 1970s. They used their vocoder in the soundtrack of 1971&#8217;s <em>Clockwork Orange<\/em>, and from there, it started to appear in commercial music by the likes of Kraftwerk, ELO, and Earth, Wind &amp; Fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/5eqZWYQ5tbIehx00NeKXz7?si=zBL5XTe2RvO-HClP7o2ZLw\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, we take even the wildest synthesized sounds for granted. However, in the 1970s, the robotic timbre that vocoders gave to the human voice felt undeniably futuristic, and set in motion countless other innovations around the marrying of synthesis and organic sounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The vocoder today <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While gear enthusiasts continue to invest in hardware vocoders created by Moog and others, today the vocoder sound has become widely available thanks to numerous plugin options, and is heard across genres spanning experimental to pop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/09IStsImFySgyp0pIQdqAc?si=N3H_uqarTUW9N8lnbqD-PQ\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With many plugins on the market, vocoding has evolved, diversified, and in ways distanced itself from the classic sound that Moog, Carlos, and their contemporaries pioneered.
