In many songs, instruments like piano or guitar are used to outline the harmony\u2014the piano in The Beatles&#8217; &#8220;Let It Be,&#8221; for example, defines the harmonic structure of the song while serving as a nice musical bed for Paul McCartney&#8217;s vocals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/7iN1s7xHE4ifF5povM6A48?si=91ed6ba43d134f63\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Other songs directly intertwine harmony with the main melody\u2014Imogen Heap&#8217;s &#8220;Hide and Seek,&#8221; for example, is characterized by its colorful use of <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/how-to-create-vocal-harmonies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vocal harmonies.<\/a> Even though there&#8217;s a clear main <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/an-introduction-to-melody\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">melody,<\/a> the supporting vocal harmonies really help add interest and emotion to the song:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure><iframe src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/track\/2tej1KSqNuxwywIpY1rDRc?si=c8bf5f73c07a4a87\" width=\"100%\" height=\"80\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do The Beatles, Imogen Heap, and others craft these sort of supporting layers that add so much to their music? Below, we&#8217;ll dive into core concepts that help us create our own harmonies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"WhatAreChords\"><strong>What are chords<\/strong>?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <strong>chord<\/strong> is a collection of pitches that form a single harmonic idea, and serves as the foundation of harmony in music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While you don&#8217;t need to be a veteran musician to be familiar with the difference between individual notes and chords, let&#8217;s take a quick listen to make sure we&#8217;re on the same page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio alignwide\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/c-major-scale.mp3\" preload=\"auto\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Example 1: Individual notes going up the C major scale<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio alignwide\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/c-major-scale-chords.mp3\" preload=\"auto\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">Example 2: A series of chords built off of the C major scale<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note how the chords in the above sequence don&#8217;t sound random\u2014they make sense and sound musically pleasant, both on their own and in relation to one another. Let&#8217;s define what these chords are, and figure out how we crafted them from a <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/an-introduction-to-music-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">music theory<\/a> perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"WhatAreTriads\">What are triads?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the chords heard in Example 2 are <a href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/triads-music-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>triads<\/strong>,<\/a> which are three-note chords that consist of two stacked <strong>thirds<\/strong> (an interval created by pitches that are two letters apart, with or without accidentals: C and E, D and F\u266f, G and B\u266d, etc.). If stacked in this way, the interval between <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>root <\/strong>(the lowest pitch) and <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>fifth<\/strong> (the highest pitch) is a <strong>fifth<\/strong> (ex. C and G, C<strong>\u266f<\/strong> and G<strong>\u266f<\/strong>, D and A, etc.). In order to construct each chord, we simply created triads using each note in the C major scale as the root, while making sure that every pitch (the root, the third, and the fifth) in the chord belonged to the key of C.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, when building a triad off of the note C, we stacked an E and a G over it, because that would allow for us to create two stacked thirds without using any notes that don&#8217;t belong to the C major scale (like E\u266d or G<strong>\u266f<\/strong>). The two most common qualities are <strong>major triads<\/strong> and <strong>minor triads<\/strong>. To understand these, we need to be able to first differentiate between <strong>major thirds <\/strong>and <strong>minor thirds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"MajorMinorThirds\">What are major and minor thirds?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s right\u2014not all thirds are the same! <strong>Major thirds<\/strong> are thirds that are specifically <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">four <strong>semitones<\/strong><\/span> (half steps) apart. For example, the interval between C and E is a major third because they&#8217;re two letters apart, and it takes four semitones to get from C to E: C<strong>\u266f<\/strong> (a.k.a. D\u266d) \u2192 D \u2192 D<strong>\u266f<\/strong> (a.k.a. In all of the other triads, the fifths are by default <strong>perfect fifths<\/strong>, meaning they&#8217;re exactly <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">seven semitones<\/span> above the root. The resulting chord progression sounds quite pleasant, definitely more than our chord scale in Example 2 (which doesn&#8217;t sound <em>bad<\/em>\u2014it&#8217;s just not quite a timeless classic like &#8220;Let It Be&#8221;).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While our exercise outlined all of the chords that naturally belong to a key, how did The Beatles choose <em>which<\/em> few chords to use, and <em>how <\/em>to order them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"RomanNumerals\">Roman numerals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What&#8217;s key to understand when it comes to building chord progressions is the idea that chords built on different scale degrees serve different functions. That is to say, a C major triad may play an entirely different role in the key of C major than it does in the key of F major, despite the fact that it can be found in both keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the previous image outlining scale degree triads, you&#8217;ll see we also labeled each triad with a <strong>roman numeral<\/strong> (I, ii, iii, etc.), with the casing corresponding to whether the chord&#8217;s quality is major or minor. These labels tell us about <em>how<\/em> each chord belongs and behaves in our key, and for this reason we generally like to use them when talking about chord progressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"CreateProgressions\"><strong>How to create chord progressions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, as we implied with our discussion of the diminished vii\u00b0 chord, there are some chords that are seen more commonly in popular music than others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Specifically, the <strong>I<\/strong>,<strong> IV<\/strong>,<strong> V<\/strong>,<strong> <\/strong>and <strong>vi <\/strong>chords get <em>a lot <\/em>of love. In fact, countless pop songs rely on just looping some order of these\u2014it&#8217;s almost kind of funny how many iconic tracks share the same harmonic structure, as highlighted in this medley of songs that feature the I &#8211; V &#8211; vi &#8211; IV progression (which includes &#8220;Let It Be&#8221;):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"4 Chords | Music Videos | The Axis Of Awesome\" width=\"370\" height=\"208\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oOlDewpCfZQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This particular progression is especially common because the way the chords flow into one another aligns really well with their natural tendencies. We&#8217;ve outlined some of these said tendencies below, for you to consider when building your own progressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"HarmonyTips\">Harmony tips for writing chord progressions:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>If we want our progression to have a major sound, the <strong>I <\/strong>chord will typically serve as the &#8216;home base,&#8217; making it a common choice as the first chord in the progression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If we want our progression to have a minor sound, the <strong>vi <\/strong>chord will typically serve as the &#8216;home base,&#8217; making it a common choice as the first chord in the progression.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>IV<\/strong> chord often leads smoothly into the V chord, but it can also be used quite flexibly, often starting and ending progressions as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While it&#8217;s rarely a chord that we start our progression on, the <strong>V <\/strong>chord often leads smoothly into the I and vi chords.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some deeper theory-based reasons that explain why the above statements on harmony are true, but we&#8217;ll save that discussion for a different day. For now, just note that these are <em>tendencies<\/em>, and not <em>rules<\/em>\u2014don&#8217;t be afraid to experiment or incorporate some of the other options that we outlined earlier like the ii, iii, and vii\u00b0 chords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"WritingToMelody\">Writing a chord progression to a melody<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While experimentation can always yield cool results, you can also get quite strategic with your progression-building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you already have a melody, think about the pitches that are emphasized in different moments. If a chord that includes those key pitches is paired with the melody, things will typically sound smoother, and if the chord doesn&#8217;t include those pitches, it can add some tension to the music. Both routes can be tasteful depending on what you&#8217;re trying to achieve in your composition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"HarmonicRhythm\">Harmonic rhythm<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Also consider playing around with the <strong>harmonic rhythm<\/strong>, or when and how often you change chords. While having one chord per measure is often the default, consider speeding up or slowing down the rate at which the chords change, and listen to how that impacts the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"WhatAreInversions\">What are inversions?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One other thing to consider is <strong>inverting<\/strong> the triad, or putting a note that isn&#8217;t the root as the lowest note. <strong>Inversions<\/strong> can create a smoother overall sound by minimizing any big jumps in pitch between adjacent chords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Intro to harmony: What inversions sound like\" width=\"370\" height=\"278\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6Z_mFAlmqq0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The demo above repeats the vi &#8211; IV &#8211; I &#8211; V chord progression twice. The first time, all of the chords are in root position, while the second time, the middle chords are inverted; the root is shifted up an octave in the IV chord, and the fifth is shifted down an octave in the I chord (recall how octaves don&#8217;t change the core identity of a pitch from <a aria-label=\"our discussion of octave equivalence in our introduction to melody (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/splice.com\/blog\/an-introduction-to-melody\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">our discussion of octave equivalence in our introduction to melody<\/a>). Notice how the transitions from chord to chord sound more abrupt in the all-root-position sequence, while the transitions are little more seamless in the latter half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t to say that the smoother feel is inherently superior, as it may again come down to taste and context. Additionally, while they don&#8217;t transform the larger function of the chord, inversions <em>do <\/em>affect emotional nuance, so that&#8217;s also a factor to consider when making these sorts of decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>So, what is harmony in music?
